Slowing down

Something that’s been “trending” through the media lately is Slow Downing or Being Quiet. Meaning people are trying to break away from the screen and the constant need to be connected.
Rob and I had this discussion while taking the dogs on a extra long walk on New Year’s Day. We’ve become aware that we’re always on our iPhones and computers. We’d be playing Tiny Towers and I’d be constantly checking and restocking. Hours would go by. And the other hours are spent on the computer or tv. I’ll be sitting watching tv and checking my phone.
So we’re going to make an effort to just break away from the screens. I’m going to be more strict with myself, while Rob is taking a more lax approach.
I think that on the weekends, other than for school, I will not surf the internet or spend a lot of time watching tv. In fact, to save money, we might even just cancel our cable for now. My phone will be used mainly as a phone. We’ve even talked about downgrading to a normal phone and getting an iPodTouch, that ended up being a lot of money, but it’s an option for the future. I’ll still surf and blog during the week, but I won’t mindlessly do it. I’ll give it meaning, you know?
I hate feeling the stress that I always need to be connected and know what’s going on. What are people tweeting, Facebooking or even blogging. Scared that I’m going to miss out if I don’t check it every hour. It truly is an addiction especially for someone like me who loves learning things.
I love technology and I am so excited to become a web designer, but I’m going to see if I can find a balance.
I hope I can make this work. Well, I know I can make this work, it’s just going to take strength and effort.
